All-Pac-12 midfielder and 2013 Stanford captain JJ Koval has been impressing scouts and observers alike over the opening days of this weekend's MLS Combine in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.
Competing among 50 collegiate seniors from the 2013 season along with Generation adidas signees and a handful of youth internationals, Koval earned praise from his performance in games Friday, the opening day of the event.
Playing in games with hastily organized teams and what's described as a "rough-and-tumble" style, Koval, who proved himself one of the top midfielders in the country last season, was praised for his strong midfield play and his ability to bring organization and order to his squad on the pitch. MLSSoccer.com reported that Koval "stepped onto the field at d-mid and...[pulled] the strings masterfully on offense while making sure the defense kept its shape."
The players took a break from games Saturday for individual physical testing, and return to the pitch for the second round of games Sunday. The competition phase of the combine wraps up Tuesday with the third round of games, and the event officially closes Thursday, Jan. 16 with the MLS SuperDraft live on ESPNNews at 9 a.m. PT in Philadelphia.
