Freshman forward Jordan Morris earned a pair of accolades Tuesday for his standout performance Friday night at UC Santa Barbara, being named Pac-12 Player of the Week and earning a spot on Top Drawer Soccer's Team of the Week.
Morris becomes Stanford's second Pac-12 Player of the Week this season, and second in a row after goalkeeper Drew Hutchins claimed the honor last Tuesday.
Morris scored the first two goals of his collegiate career Friday, accounting for Stanford's production on the scoresheet in its 2-1 overtime win in Santa Barbara. Morris opened the scoring just past the half-hour mark, then, after the Gauchos had equalized in the second half and sent the match into extra time, the Mercer Island, Wash. native redirected a Ty Thompson shot past Gaucho goalkeeper Josh McNeely for the 95th-minute winner.
The win improved the Cardinal's record on the year to 5-1-1 and extended the team's winning streak to five. It is the longest winning streak for the program since winning six in a row in September 2009.
The goals move Morris into second on the team with seven points, as the freshman leads the Cardinal with three assists.
Stanford will have the chance to match its longest winning streak in five years when it opens Pac-12 play this weekend at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium. The Cardinal starts the weekend Thursday at 7 p.m. against No. 3 Washington and finishes it up Sunday at 3 p.m. against Oregon State. Both matches will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Network.
