NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Stanford squash team knocked off No. 8 Dartmouth and No. 12 Bates College on Saturday at Yale’s Brady Squash Center in New Haven, Conn.

The two victories made the Cardinal 2-1 on the road trip to New Haven with one match to go. Stanford is now 4-3 overall on the season.

Stanford started off the day with a 6-3 victory over Dartmouth. The match was the tightest of the year for the Cardinal with all but one match going more than three sets.

Junior Madeleine Gill was the only player to sweep her match. Playing at the No. 1 position, she defeated Jacqueline Barnes 11-4, 12-10, 11-6 for her third victory of the year.

Freshman Bailey Bondy and sophomore Caroline Gillette each won in four sets. Bondy was able to pull out two tight sets, edging Katherine Nimmo, 12-10, in both the first and fourth sets to improve to 2-1 on the season. Gillette won the first two sets and then after Sarah Caughey fended off elimination she closed it out going 11-6 in the fourth.

The key to Stanford’s victory was being able to pull out victories in three of the four matches that went to a fifth set. Freshman CC Ho had a tremendous rally after losing each of the first two sets by an 11-6 score. She came back to win the next three for her third win on the year.

Senior Serena Fagan also trailed before earning her first win of the season. She won the opening set before Nina Scott took the next two. Fagan bounced back with an 11-5 win in the fourth and then closed it out 11-8 in the fifth.

Junior Ally Huchro put together a clutch third set after she dropped the first two against Kensy Balch. Huchro pulled out a 14-12 victory to extend the match and then used the momentum to win the fourth and fifth by an 11-4 count. Freshman Julia Olson also won two sets after falling behind 0-2, but was unable to take the match, falling to Lydie McKenzie.

In the nightcap of the doubleheader, the Cardinal took down Bates, 7-2. Five different Cardinal players won in straight sets, including Ho, Fagan, Bondy, Sarah Haig and Francesca Fleischer. The win extended Fleischer’s perfect season to 3-0. Ho, Fagan and Bondy each won for the second time on the day.

Also earning wins against the Bobcats were Huchro and senior Julia Hemmendinger. Each won in four sets to help Stanford pick up the team win. Hemmendinger is now 4-1 in her final season on The Farm.

Stanford will take on Trinity College on Sunday at Yale to complete the road trip.
