STANFORD, Calif. – The No. 7 Stanford squash team will kick off its 2013-14 season in Philadelphia, Pa. this weekend with two matches on Saturday at Drexel and one on Sunday at Penn.

The Cardinal will face three ranked opponents in the two-day span. This season Stanford returns nine letterwinners from last year’s squad that went 7-7 and finished seventh nationally. The Cardinal lost two All-Americans, Pamela Chua and Julie Koenig  to graduation. Leading the way for Stanford in 2013-14 will be senior captain Serena Fagan and junior Madeleine Gill. Fagan is the only senior on the roster while head coach Mark Talbott added three freshmen to the roster in Bailey Bondy (Locust Valley, N.Y.), CC Ho (Belmont, Mass.) and Julia Olson (St. Louis, Mo.).

The first match of the season will be at 5 p.m. (ET) against No. 6 Cornell. The Big Red set a school record with 13 victories last season, two of which were 5-4 wins versus the Cardinal.  Leading the way for Cornell is junior Danielle Letourneau, a two-time All-American and All-Ivy League selection, who advanced to the quarterfinals of the national individual championships a year ago.

The back end of the Saturday doubleheader will feature Stanford’s match against No. 13 Williams College. The match will begin at 7 p.m. (ET). Last season The Cardinal won the matchup between the two schools, 8-1. Williams enters the weekend undefeated in 2013-14 with a 4-0 record, including three 9-0 sweeps. The Ephs have used three different athletes in the No. 1 position with Alyssa Northrop, Nicole Feshbach and Caroline Sawin all competing in the top spot.

Sunday’s match will take place at 12 noon (ET) at No. 3 Penn. The Quakers earned a decisive 7-2 victory over the Cardinal when the two schools collided last season. Penn will begin its season this weekend, facing Williams College before taking on Stanford. Last season the Quakers posted a 14-3 record and finished third in the Howe Cup. Sophomore Yan Xin Tan is a returning CSA first team All-American while senior Chloe Blacker went 18-2 last season.

The three matches this weekend will be Stanford’s only contests in 2013. The Cardinal will resume play again January 6-8 when they host Hamilton and Drexel on The Farm.
