Cardinal Tops Splashcats

STANFORD, Calif. – The Stanford synchronized swimming team defeated the University of Arizona Splashcats, 88-77, Saturday at the Avery Aquatic Center in Stanford, Calif.

“Our team pulled together and did a great job against the University of Arizona,” said second-year head coach Sara Lowe. “We have changed personnel throughout the past two weeks and increased the difficulty of the routines. I thought the changes added vast improvements to the routines and was very excited with how the team performed at such a high level.”

Senior Leigh Haldeman, junior Megan Hansley, sophomore Mina Shah, sophomore Carolyn Morrice, freshman Isabella Park and freshman Marisa Tashima won the team swim with an 82.167 for the Cardinal. Arizona’s Cheryl Cheah, Maggie Gauthier, Madelaine Gustafson, Alexa Stallworth, Allie Vanden Berge, Mataya Vanden Berge, Lauren Meadows and Alissa Hatfield scored a 76.500.

Arizona’s Stallworth won the solo swim with a 75.633, while Stanford’s Morrice took second with a 73.00. Meadows scored a 72.233 for the Splashcats.

In the duet, Hansley and sophomore Evelyna Wang scored an 83.200 to take first in the event. Tashima and Park finished second with an 82.633. Arizona’s Hatfield and Vanden Berge tallied a 75.433, edging teammates Cheah and Vanden Berge (75.233). The Splashcats’ Kathryn Surber and Alexandra Starrett scored a 62.200.

Hansley and Wang were joined by Haldeman to win the trio for the Cardinal with an 83.000. Stanford’s Park, Tashima and Shah took second with a 77.167. Arizona’s Gauthier, Stallworth and Meadows were third with a 75.733.

Up next, Stanford travels to Mesa, Ariz., to face Arizona State on Saturday, March 1. The Cardinal will then compete at the Western Regionals on Sunday, March 2.
