VENICE, Italy – Sophomore Alexander Massialas went undefeated in pool play to advance to the final day of the Senior Men’s Foil Grand Prix in Venice, Italy on Saturday.
Ranked just outside of the top 16 at No. 18, Massialas was forced to fence his way into the final 64 instead of earning a bye through the first day.
Massialas was one of 10 fencers to go undefeated in the pool rounds at 6-0. Overall there were 163 entries into the field. During his six matches, Massialas only allowed seven touches, finishing with a 30-7 advantage to ear the second best seed coming out of the pools.
The six wins came against Rhys Melia of Great Britain, Howie Ho Yin Chan of Hong Kong, David Alexander of Ireland, Pawel Osmanski of Poland, Sven Stuehler of Austria and Johann Gustinelli of Germany.
With his performace, he bypassed the first two rounds of the tables and into the final 64. Bouts will continue on Sunday. Massialas will go up against No. 47 Moritz Kroeplin of Germany in his first match.
