ST. PETERSBOURG, Russia – Sophomore Alexander Massialas placed 21st at the Senior Foil Grand Prix event in St. Petersbourg, Russia on Sunday.
After receiving a bye through Saturday’s rounds, Massials came out strong with a victory in his round of 64 match. He beat No. 59 Benoit Journet of France, 15-11.
In the round of 32, Massialas faced one of Russian’s own fencers in No. 21 Dmitry Komissarov. There was no place like home for Komissarov as he eliminated Massialas in a close 15-12 contest.
Massialas added six points to his season total with his 21st place finish.
Also on Sunday sophomore Vivian Kong competed for Hong Kong in the team division of the Senior Epee World Cup in St. Maur, France. Hong Kong lost a close first round match to Japan, 36-32. They would place 17th overall.
Next weekend Stanford fencing will be in Pasadena, Calif. for the NCAA West Regionals. Massialas, Kong and the rest of the squad will attempt to qualify for the NCAA Championships.
