LA CARUÑA, Spain – Sophomore fencer Alexander Massialas helped Team USA earn a bronze medal at the Foil World Cup in La Caruña, Spain on Sunday.
The United States were the No. 2 seed in the team tournament and had a first round bye. The first dual for the Americans came against Hong Kong in the round of 32. The U.S. dispatched Hong Kong with ease, 45-21, to move on to face China.
In the China match, Massialas had an impressive 10-4 win in the anchor bout against Jianfei Ma to push the United States past China, 45-43, and send them on to the semifinals.
Next up was Russia and it ended up being another close one. However, the Americans were on the losing end, falling short, 45-41.
The loss put the U.S. in the bronze medal match against Germany. The Americans rose to the occasion, coming away with the bronze medal after a 45-40 victory.
The next event on the international circuit will be the Senior Men’s Foil Grand Prix March 15-16 in Venice, Italy.
