STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford sophomore fencer Alexander Massialas helped lead the U.S. men’s foil team to a first place finish at the  Pan American Championships this past week in Cartagena, Colombia.

Massialas helped lead the men’s foil team to a 45-18 victory over Brazil to claim gold.

This is the fifth consecutive year that Massialas has helped lead the team to gold at the Pan American Championships.

Massialas finished fifth in men’s foil individual competition after he was upset in the quarterfinals by Canadian Maximilien Van Haaster, falling 15-12. Four of the top five finishes went to Team USA, three of whom are current collegiate athletes.

Massialas is coming off a big freshman year in which he claimed the men’s foil individual NCAA title and three weeks later took gold at the Junior World Championships.
