COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Stanford advanced to the finals of the Gill Coed Championship on Wednesday with a fourth-place finish in the semifinals.
The Cardinal entered the day in ninth place – the final qualifying position – among 18 teams and needed a strong performance to advance to the finals.
Stanford did just that.
The Cardinal finished the two-day qualifying regatta with 73 points in six races across two divisions.
Oliver Toole, Kevin Laube, Carolyn Ortel and Yuri Namikawa produced 44 points in division-A to finish seventh. The quartet opened the day with a 13th-place result but got better as the day went on, producing a seventh-place result in the following race. The group registered its best race on the day with a second-place finish in the third heat and completed its competition with a fifth-place result.
Antoine Screve, Kieran Chung, Helena Scutt and Haley Kirk generated a third-place showing in division-B with 29 points. The group had an outstanding day of racing, finishing in the top-five in all four races.
Screve, Chung, Scutt and Kirk opened the day with a second-place result, followed by a third-place showing in the second heat. The team continued to thrive with a fifth-place finish in the third race. The quartet concluded the day with its best showing, earning a first-place result.
