STANFORD, Calif. – On Monday assistant coaches Nate Rooks and Becca Carlton were honored for their hard work and success this season when they were chosen as the CRCA West Regional Staff of the Year.
Rooks and Carlton helped lead Stanford to a fourth place finish at the NCAA Championships, the first Pac-12 Championship in school history and a sweep of the top three boats over Cal in the Big Row.
Both coaches assisted in all facets of day-to-day coaching, but were also coaches of certain boats. Rooks worked primarily with the 2V8 during the spring and Carlton guided the varsity four.
Under the supervision of Rooks, the 2V8 placed fourth at the NCAA Championships, won gold at the Pac-12 Championships and claimed a total of eight race victories in 2014.
“Nate has done an exceptional job coaching the 2nd varsity eight this year and that boat’s improved results are directly related to his efforts,” said head coach Yasmin Farooq. “Nate also heads up all recruiting. As a Stanford grad and rowing alum, he understands the Stanford scholar-athlete experience firsthand and has done a fantastic job of showing top recruits why Stanford is indeed the perfect blend of academics and athletics.”
Rooks also drives the boats to regattas and has done several wood-working projects at the boathouse to improve operations.
Carlton helped lead the four to its highest finish at the NCAA Championships in school history as they took second in the Grand Final on Sunday for silver. The four also won gold at the Pac-12 Championships after finishing no better than fourth the previous seven years in head coach Yasmin Farooq’s tenure. Overall in 2014 the four posted eight wins in its races.
“Under Becca the Stanford varsity four has reached new heights with a slew of wins over the course of the season and a best ever 2nd place finish at the NCAA’s,” said Farooq. “Becca starts each fall season teaching our walk-ons and less experienced rowers. Her patience and calm demeanor, coupled with her love of the sport make her an incredible teacher.”
Carlton is also in charge of boat repair, an extremely important and time consuming job. Carlton and Rooks also rig all of the boats as Stanford does not have a rigger position on staff.
Stanford ended up sweeping the regional coaching awards as last week Farooq was tabbed West Regional Coach of the Year. Farooq was also named the Pac-12 Coach of the Year for the second time in her career.
