STANFORD, Calif. – The annual Big Row against Cal is this Saturday and will mark the final home race for eight Stanford seniors.
The eight seniors on this year’s roster include Christina Bax (human biology), Anna Dawson (psychology), Ali Fauci (computer science), Valerie Frank (graduate student in management, science and engineering), Katie Lopez (engineering-product design), Daphne Martschenko (anthropology and Slavic languages and literatures), Chierika Ukogu (human biology) and Kristy Wentzel (human biology).
The seniors will try to lead No. 4 Stanford against No. 2 Cal in four races at Redwood Shores. The 2V4 and varsity four will start things off for the women’s team with races at 9:50 a.m. and 10 a.m. respectively.
The varsity four has enjoyed one of its best seasons in recent years, having won five races this year. The boat has three straight victories over top 10 teams, beating No. 9 USC for the second time in two weeks last weekend and also topping Notre Dame at the Lake Natoma Invitational. The 2V4 last placed fourth at Lake Natoma, in the team’s only race this season against Cal.
The 2V8 will face the Golden Bears at 10:20 a.m. Just like the varsity four, the Cardinal 2V8 has put together three straight wins against USC and Notre Dame. Stanford also has a memorable win over then No. 2 Ohio State at the Oregon State Classic, ending a 19-race winning streak for the Buckeyes’ 2V8. Stanford’s last victory over Cal came from the 2V8 in 2011.
The final women’s race of the morning will come at 10:40 a.m. as the varsity eights vie for bragging rights at this year’s edition of the Big Row. Stanford is looking for its first win in the race since 2009, when they went on to win the national championship. The Cardinal top eight has won three races this spring and are coming off a loss to No. 9 USC last weekend at Redwood Shores.
A trophy presentation will take place at 11:30 a.m. following the morning’s races.
The Big Row will also be the final regular season event for Stanford. The Pac-12 Championships will be the next race on Lake Natoma May 18.
