STANFORD, Calif. – The Stanford women’s rowing team will begin its 2013-14 season this weekend when they travel to Gold River, Calif. on Saturday for the Head of the American on Lake Natoma.

“The Head of the American is a fun race,” said head coach Yasmin Farooq. “This year it is attracting a lot of the Pac-12. A lot of the teams use it to race in a number of disciplines.”

Farooq will get her first chance to look at how her team fares in competitions after the squad has been practicing for about one month. She welcomes back eight seniors and seven juniors to make up an experienced group. The 15 upperclassmen will be joined by the 11 freshmen and 13 sophomores as the team tries to get off to a good start.

For the Head of the American, Stanford will compete in four events with 12 boats in all competing on Saturday.

“Head of the American is a race full of good times,” said senior Anna Dawson. “Everyone is in high spirits with it being the first race of the season. Seeing all of the other schools really brings you back to the competitive spirit of rowing.”

The first chance to take a look at the Cardinal will be at 10:15 a.m. when the Novice Eight make their collegiate debut with 14 other boats. The second morning race will be the Women’s Collegiate 2- with Stanford putting four boats among the 26 entries in the race.

The Cardinal returns in the afternoon for two more events. Two eights will be among the 26 boats in the Women’s Collegiate 8+ at 1:45 p.m. Farooq and her squad will then wrap up the afternoon with five boats competing among 28 entries in the Women’s Collegiate 4+ at 3 p.m.

“We are super excited for the Head of the American and it is always a great race,” said senior Daphne Martschenko. “We will have some good competiton. It is really fun because we get to race in small boats and big boats.

The day’s events features 52 races overall beginning at 9 a.m. In all there are 64 clubs and 594 entries expected to compete on the day.
