Stanford women's rowing alumnae Grace Luczak '11 and Elle Logan '11 took home medals at the Samsung World Rowing Cup #3 event in Lucerne, Switzerland over the weekend.
Luczak, rowing with the U.S. eight, claimed gold as the boat set a new world's best time of 5:54.16, beating the previous best by one-hundredth of a second. That previous best of 5:54.17 was also held by the U.S., set last year at a World Rowing Cup event.
The eight went wire-to-wire in its victory, finishing 6.25 seconds ahead of silver medalist Romania and nearly seven-and-a-half seconds ahead of bronze medalist Canada.
Logan, competing in the single sculls, took the silver medal, bringing her haul for the 2013 World Cup series to four medals.
After opening in fourth position at the 500-meter mark, Logan worked her way through an experienced field and into second position by the final 500 meters. In the end, Logan would cross the line in 7:16.08, 1.73 seconds behind Australia's Kim Crow but 0.36 of a second ahead of 2012 Olympic Gold Medalist Mirka Knapkova for the silver medal.
