WIRA Championship Weekend

STANFORD, Calif. – The No. 2 Stanford lightweight rowing team will head to Rancho Cordova, Calif. this weekend for the 2014 WIRA Championships on Lake Natoma.

The Cardinal will send three boats to compete on Saturday and Sunday. Racing on Saturday at Lake Natoma will begin at 8 a.m. Stanford will hit the water for its first race at 10 a.m. when the second varsity eight will compete in heat two of the Women’s 2nd Varsity Eight D1/Open event. The Cardinal will go up against Portland, San Diego State and Santa Clara.

Shortly after the varsity eight will be in action with the first heat in the Women’s Varsity Eight D1/Open race at 10:30 a.m. Again Stanford will be taking on openweight crews as they draw Portland, Loyola Marymount and Santa Clara.

Sunday’s racing is scheduled to start at 8 a.m. Stanford’s first race will be at 9:30 a.m. when they join five other boats for the Women’s Lightweight Four Grand Final. Long Beach State, Washington State (2), and UC Irvine (2) will join the Cardinal in the field.

How the two eights finish on Saturday will determine which race they compete in on Sunday. For the second varsity eight the petite final will be Sunday at 10:40 a.m. and the grand final at 10:50 a.m. The varsity eight petite final will take place at 11:20 a.m. with the grand final at 12 noon.

Stanford is coming off a trip to Boston last weekend, where they raced against four of the other top seven teams in the country. The Cardinal varsity eight took second to then No. 2 Harvard-Radcliffe on Saturday while finishing ahead of No. 4 Boston University, No. 5 Wisconsin and No. 7 MIT. On Sunday Stanford ‘s top eight won its race against BU and Wisconsin. The 2V8 took third in each of its races.

The WIRA Championships start the final month of the season for Stanford as they continue to build towards the IRA National Championships in West Windsor, N.J. May 28-31. The Cardinal will also race in the Big Row against Cal next weekend on May 3 and then compete for the final time before IRA’s on Saturday, May 17 at the PCRC Championships in Sacramento.
