STANFORD, Calif. – Senior Dan Scherer has been named the Stanford Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for Feb. 24 – March 2.
Scherer was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler at the Pac-12 Championships after knocking off top-seeded Taylor Meeks of Oregon State, 4-2, in sudden victory at 197 pounds. It is the first conference title for the St. Louis, Mo., native, as he became the 18th conference champion in program history. The Cardinal has now produced at least one conference champion in each of the last five years, also a school record.
Stanford finished as the Pac-12 runner-up in the team standings, but produced the most individual title winners in the tournament. Joining Scherer atop the podium were redshirt senior Ryan Mango (133 pounds), a two-time champion, sophomore Evan Silver (125 pounds) and redshirt freshman Jim Wilson (165 pounds).
It marks the first weekly honor for Scherer, who moved up five spots in the national rankings to No. 14. He is the second Cardinal wrestler to receive the honor this season joining Wilson (Feb. 11).
Stanford will have two weeks to prepare for the NCAA Championships, held March 20-22 in Oklahoma City, Okla. The Cardinal’s four Pac-12 Champions as well as senior Kyle Meyer (174 pounds) will compete for national championships.
