Hutchins did just about everything a goalkeeper could do in leading the Cardinal to a penalty kick victory over Loyola Marymount in the first round of the NCAA tournament after the teams had tied, 1-1. Hutchins assisted on the tying goal with 17 seconds left in regulation. Then, with the penalty shootout tied, 2-2, he converted the Cardinal’s fifth-round turn and promptly stopped LMU’s final effort to end the match.
He would go on to make a save and post his fifth shutout of the season, in Sunday’s 1-0 second-round victory at Cal State Northridge. The Cardinal plays at Washington on Sunday in the third round.
With Stanford trailing in the final minute against LMU, Hutchins moved up into the offense and flicked a header to teammate Zach Batteer to tie the match. In overtime, Hutchins made two outstanding saves to keep Stanford alive, before his penalty-kick heroics.
This is Hutchins’ first Stanford/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week honor and the second for the men’s soccer team in this season.
