STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford wrestler Nick Amuchastegui has been named the Stanford/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for March 12-18 after finishing as the national runner-up at the 2012 NCAA Championships in St. Louis, Mo.
Amuchastegui, the No. 3 seed at 174 pounds, went 4-1 in the postseason for the second straight year. He became the only Cardinal wrestler to reach the NCAA finals on multiple occasions and just the second three-time All-American in program history. His wins at the championships included a 6-3 decision over the No. 2 seed, and previously undefeated, Chris Perry of Oklahoma State in the semifinals.
Amuchastegui finishes his senior season with a 24-1 overall record and a career mark of 118-19. His 118 career wins are the fourth-most in school history. He also tallied 18 pins throughout his career, tied for the eighth-most by a Cardinal wrestler.
Along with Amuchastegui's second-place finish, junior Ryan Mango (125 pounds) placed fifth at the championships giving the Cardinal a 16th-place finish overall, the second-best mark in school history.
It is the fourth Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week honor for Amuchastegui and his third this season.
