STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford wrestler Nick Amuchastegui has been named the Stanford/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week after claiming his second conference title and leading the team to a third-place finish overall at the 2012 Pac-12 Championships in Boise, Idaho.
Amuchastegui, ranked No. 1 in the nation at 174 pounds, recorded a 10-5 decision over Scotty Bacon of Boise State in the semifinals and edged No. 7 Ryan DesRoches of Cal Poly, 5-4, for the title. The senior, who was also crowned the conference champion in 2010 at 165 pounds, becomes just the fourth wrestler in Stanford history to win multiple conference titles.
Junior Ryan Mango (125 pounds) also captured a conference title for the Cardinal, giving Stanford two individual champions in the same season for the first time since 1986.
It is the third Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week honor for Amuchastegui as he won the honor in March 2011 after finishing runner-up at the NCAA Championships and earlier this year on Jan. 17 after recording a major decision over DesRoches in a dual meet.
