STANFORD, Calif. - Senior Nnemkadi Ogwumike (Cypress, Texas/Cy-Fair High School) of the Stanford women's basketball team was selected as the Stanford/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of Jan. 2-8.
Ogwumike became Stanford's fourth member of the 2,000-Point/1,000-Rebound Club in Saturday's 67-60 win over Oregon State, reaching both milestones in the contest. She joins Jayne Appel (2006-10), Nicole Powell (2000-04) and Val Whiting (1989-93) in the exclusive club.
In Stanford's wins over Oregon and Oregon State last weekend, Ogwumike averaged 32.5 points and 15.5 rebounds and shot 52.0 percent from the field. She posted double-doubles in both contests as well as notching her fourth and fifth 30-point performances of the season.
Saturday, she helped carry Stanford past upset-minded Oregon State, scoring 33 points with 16 rebounds in the win. Two days earlier, Ogwumike went 15-for-21 from the field, scoring 32 points and grabbing 15 rebounds in a 93-70 win over Oregon.
The wins extended Stanford's home winning streak to 71 games, and pushed its winning streak against Pac-12 competition to 61 games.
Ogwumike capped her successful week by being named Bank of the West Pac-12 Player of the Week Monday, the third time this season and seventh in her career that she has earned the honor.
This is Ogwumike's sixth Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week honor and the third for the women's basketball team in the 2011-12 season.
Fourth-ranked Stanford makes its first Pac-12 trip to Utah and Colorado this weekend, opening up with a 6 p.m. PT contest Thursday against the Utes in Salt Lake City. The weekend comes to a close Saturday with a 3 p.m. PT game at Colorado which will be televised on ROOT Sports.
