Feb. 22, 2011
RS Senior Lauren Schmidt (Bay Shore, N.Y. / Bay Shore High School) of the Stanford lacrosse team was selected as the Stanford/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of February 14-20.
Schmidt led Stanford to a big week, scoring two goals and three assists in the upset win over No. 5 Syracuse. Schmidt assisted on three of the first four goals to get Stanford out to an early lead. She did a nice job of attacking to draw the defense and then finding the open cutters in scoring position.
Later in the game, Schmidt scored two goals of her own. Both of Schmidt's goals were unassisted as she was able to dodge in front of the goal and finish a couple of shots from tough angles.
Schmidt is earning her first Stanford/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week honor of her career. This marks the second consecutive week that a lacrosse player has been honored with Leslie Foard winning the award last week. It is the first time that two different teammates have won the award since Foluke Akinradewo and Alix Klineman accomplished the feat for women's volleyball back in September of 2008.
Also nominated: Evan Barry (men's volleyball), Alyssa Brown (women's gymnastics), Samantha Buechner (squash), Teagan Gerhart (softball), Tim Gentry (men's gymnastics), Nicole Gibbs (women's tennis), Denis Lin (men's tennis), Chiney Ogwumike (women's basketball), Melissa Seidemann (women's water polo), Austin Staab (men's swimming), Sally Watson (women's golf), Austin Wilson (baseball)
