STANFORD, Calif. - Senior Alina Garciamendez (Fairview, Texas/Ursuline Academy) of the No. 3 Stanford women's soccer team was selected as the Stanford/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of September 3-9.
Garciamendez scored two goals, including a game-winner, and contributed to two shutouts as the Cardinal won the Stanford Nike Invitational with victories over Boston University, 1-0, and No. 23 Georgetown, 6-0.
On Friday, Garciamendez moved up from her central defender position late in a scoreless match and struck a 20-yard shot that settled inside the right post in the 89th minute. It was the first goal Garciamendez had scored with her feet during her collegiate career. On Sunday, she headed in Sydney Payne's corner kick to give the Cardinal a 3-0 first-half lead against Georgetown. Also, the shutouts were Stanford's first of the season.
This is Garciamendez's first Stanford/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week honor and the first for the women's soccer team in the 2012 season. Garciamendez and the Cardinal currently boast a 4-1-1 overall record heading into this weekend's Santa Clara Classic, which begins with a Friday match against No. 15 San Diego State at 5 p.m.
