STANFORD, Calif. - Senior Rachel Quon (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest High School) of the No. 1 Stanford women's soccer team was selected as the Stanford/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of October 22-29.
Quon scored the winning goal to beat No. 2 UCLA on Sunday and assisted on an overtime winner against USC on Friday to factor into two of Stanford's biggest goals this season on the way to clinching its fourth consecutive Pac-12 championship.
Quon moved into the midfield when Stanford trailed UCLA in the second half and sparked Stanford's attack, leading to a 2-1 victory in a matchup between the top-ranked teams in the country. Quon scored the winning goal when in the 79th minute when she took a pass from Chioma Ubogagu, settled it with one touch and took a left-footed shot that snuck inside the right post from 10 yards out.
Quon also helped on the tying goal 72 seconds earlier when her run drew a defender off Ubogagu, who then scored from 22 yards out. For Quon, the goal was the second of the season for the team captain and four-year starter. She also provided strong defense on UCLA's conference-leading goal-scorer Zakiya Bywaters, who was held scoreless.
On Friday, Quon served a free kick from the Stanford side of the midfield stripe into the box, resulting in a 103rd-minute winner by Alina Garciamendez, keeping Stanford's title hopes alive.
This is Quon's first Stanford/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week honor and the second for the women's soccer team in the 2012 season. Quon and the Cardinal currently boast a 16-1-1 overall record and a perfect 10-0 mark in the Pac-12 heading into Sunday's rivalry match against California in Berkeley.
