STANFORD, Calif. - Junior Brian Cook (Santa Cruz, Calif./Soquel High School) of the No. 2 Stanford men's volleyball team was selected as the Stanford/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of January 7-13.
Cook had 24 kills, including five in a dramatic fifth set, to lead Stanford to a 25-23, 17-25, 25-27, 25-17, 19-17 comeback victory over Pacific in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opener on Saturday night at Burnham Pavilion.
Stanford fought off six match points, including two on kills by Cook, to overcome deficits of 14-11, 15-14, 16-15, and 17-16 in the fifth set. Cook hit .304 for the match and had eight digs, three block assists, and two assists.
This is Cook's first Stanford/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week honor, though his sister, Carissa Cook, earned one in women's volleyball on October 18, 2011. It also is the first for the men's volleyball team in the 2012-13 season. Cook and the Cardinal currently boast a 4-0 overall record and a 1-0 mark in the MPSF heading into this weekend's matches at No. 7 USC on Friday and No. 4 Pepperdine on Sunday.
