STANFORD, Calif.- Junior Nicole Gibbs was recently named the Pac-12 Player of the Week for April 8-14, as announced by the conference office on Tuesday.
Gibbs was undefeated in a pair of matches over the weekend, as No. 12 Stanford (16-3, 8-1 Pac-12) swept a key desert road trip with victories against No. 75 Arizona (7-0) and No. 21 Arizona State (6-1). Making her return to the court at the No. 1 spot following a two-match break, Gibbs defeated Arizona's Lacey Smyth 6-3, 6-1 before taking down 16th-ranked Jacqueline Cako of Arizona State 6-4, 7-5.
Gibbs is the first Stanford player to claim the conference honor since Ellen Tsay was recognized last March in back-to-back weeks.
Stanford, which has won five in a row, faces No. 9 California (14-5, 8-1 Pac-12) in Berkeley on Friday. The contest will be televised live on the Pac-12 Networks. The doubles competition begins at 12:30 p.m., with the telecast joined in progress at 2 p.m. and showcasing the singles matches on courts Nos. 1-3. Paul Sunderland will handle play-by-play duties while Justin Gimelstob serves as the color analyst.
