Nov. 29, 2010
Junior Jacob Smith (Coronado, Calif./Coronado High School) of the No. 5 Stanford men’s water polo team was selected as the Stanford/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of Nov. 22-28, 2010.
Smith led the Cardinal with seven goals at this past weekend’s MPSF Tournament, in which fourth-seeded Stanford came within one goal of completing an upset run which would have seen it claim its second National Collegiate Championship berth in three years. Smith’s play helped lead the Cardinal to a quarterfinal victory over UC Irvine, then in the semifinal round he scored twice, including the game-clincher on a five-meter penalty, in Stanford’s 8-6 upset of top-ranked California. Sunday, facing USC in the championship game, he scored twice more, including a clutch equalizer in overtime in the Cardinal’s eventual 8-7 sudden-death loss.
This week’s Muscle Milk honor is the first of Smith’s career and the second this season for the Cardinal men’s water polo team.
Stanford finished the 2010 season with a record of 15-8.
