STANFORD, Calif. – Given what a hotbed the city of Houston and surrounding Texas area has become for producing great Stanford student-athletes, thought it only fitting to find out why.

So we went to the top and posed the question to Houston mayor Annise Parker.

“Houston is known as a ‘can do’ city,” Parker said. “When it comes to our athletes, we are born winners. Sometimes we can be a little boastful … This time we have four reasons! Within the last three years, four Stanford athletes have been selected No. 1 overall by their respective professional leagues: Andrew Luck – the NFL in 2012, whose father Oliver Luck held a prominent position within our Sports Authority for many years; Mark Appel – MLB in 2013; Nneka Ogwumike – the WNBA in 2012; and Chiney Ogwumike – the WNBA in 2014. They have the perfect combination of intellect and athleticism and they continue to make Houston proud.”

So now you know.
