Release: 11/25/2013

Senior forward Chiney Ogwumike was named to the Naismith Trophy Top-50 List, the Atlanta Tip-Off Club announced Monday.

Now on the preseason list for all three major postseason individual awards (Wade Trophy, John R. Wooden Award, Naismith Trophy), Ogwumike is one of six Pac-12 players on the Naismith list. She is joined by California’s Brittany Boyd and Gennifer Brandon, USC’s Cassie Harberts, Utah’s Michelle Plouffe and Washington’s Jazmine Davis.

Through the first five games of the 2013-14 campaign, Ogwumike ranks second in the Pac-12 with 25.6 points and 11.8 rebounds a game, and is sixth with a 57.0 field-goal percentage. Stanford owns a record of 4-1 and will aim to increase its win total this week at the Hardwood Tournament of Hope in Puerto Vallarta as it plays three games in three days starting Tuesday against No. 18/22 Purdue and continuing against Florida Gulf Coast and South Dakota State.

Wednesday’s game could also be the opportunity for Setsuko Ishiyama Director of Women’s Basketball Tara VanDerveer to win her 900th-career game, making her just the fifth women’s basketball coach to join the exclusive club.

Ogwumike has posted four double-doubles in five games this year and twice been named Pac-12 Player of the Week (Nov. 11, Nov. 18). The two selections increased her Pac-12-record number to 11. She scored a career-high 32 points against Cal Poly on Nov. 15 and despite the Cardinal suffering its lone loss of the campaign at Connecticut on Nov. 11, Ogwumike battled through the Husky defense to put up a double-double of 16 points and 13 rebound in the contest.

In the conference and school record books, Ogwumike is just 86 rebounds away from matching Kayla Pedersen’s career record of 1,266, and has an outside chance of reaching Candice Wiggins’ all-time scoring record of 2,629 points, sitting 731 back of the Cardinal great. With 102 more points Ogwumike will become just the fifth Stanford player in the “2,000/1,000” Club with 2,000 career points and 1,000 career rebounds, joining older sister Nnemkadi Ogwumike, Jayne Appel, Nicole Powell and Val Whiting.
