Release: 07/26/2013

Stanford women’s basketball guard Toni Kokenis took a medical retirement Friday, ending her Stanford basketball career.

The Oak Brook, Ill. native will remain with the team for her senior year in 2013-14 as she works towards her degree in human biology.

“Toni Kokenis has been an integral part of our program’s continued success and even though she won’t be on the court, we know she will continue to provide leadership and guidance to our team in her new role,” said Setsuko Ishiyama Director of Women’s Basketball Tara VanDerveer. “We are saddened that this injury has ended her decorated playing career, but we all know that this is the right decision for Toni’s long-term well-being.”

Kokenis sustained a concussion during spring workouts in 2012 which limited her preseason practice, then sustained a second during Stanford’s 65-45 victory at Oregon State Feb. 3, which kept her out of the final 14 games of the 2012-13 season.

Over her three-year playing career, Kokenis helped lead Stanford to two Final Fours (2011, 2012) and three Pac-12 doubles (winning the regular season and tournament titles in the same year). She started 57 of the 91 games in which she appeared, averaging 24.6 minutes a game. Kokenis also averaged 7.7 points (688 career points) and 2.40 assists a game and shot 39.3 percent from the field, a figure which includes 66 3-pointers.

Kokenis was named to the All-Pac-12 Team as a sophomore in 2011-12 when she averaged 9.5 points, 3.2 rebounds and 3.57 assists per game. Her versatility at both guard positions helped lead the Cardinal to the Pac-12 double as well as its fifth-straight Final Four appearance.

In other injury news for the Cardinal, second-year forward Aly Beebe suffered a torn ACL during a recent summer workout and will miss the 2013-14 season. It is Beebe’s third ACL injury. The Santa Maria, Calif. native sat out her freshman season in 2012-13 due to an ACL tear suffered during her senior year of high school in spring 2012.
