STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford’s Setsuko Ishiyama Director of Women’s Basketball Tara VanDerveer has reached a long-term agreement with the school, Jaquish and Kenninger Director of Athletics Bernard Muir announced today.

VanDerveer, just six wins shy of becoming the fifth women’s basketball coach to reach the 900-win mark, has led Stanford to a pair of national titles, 10 Final Four appearances and 24 NCAA Tournament bids over her 27 seasons on The Farm. The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame (2011) and Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame (2002) member has missed just one of the Cardinal’s 11 total Final Four appearances (1996) as she spent the 1995-96 season leading the USA Basketball Olympic Team to a 60-0 overall mark and the gold medal at the 1996 Atlanta Games.

In 2012-13 VanDerveer led the Cardinal to its 25th straight NCAA Tournament appearance and 20th Sweet 16 trip. The Cardinal’s 33-3 overall record marked the program’s sixth straight 30-win season and included the team’s seventh straight Pac-12 double (winning the conference regular season and tournament titles in the same year).

“I have been extremely fortunate to work with an incredible staff as well as the brightest and most motivated student-athletes here at Stanford for nearly 30 years, and I look forward to the privilege of many more,” said VanDerveer. “It is to them and to athletic director Bernard Muir that I say thank you for the opportunity to continue leading the Stanford women’s basketball program into its bright future.”

Since her arrival at Stanford in 1985, VanDerveer has accumulated a record of 742-152 (.830) while her career record stands at 894-203 (.815) through 34 years of coaching. While on The Farm she has led the Cardinal to 21 Pac-10/Pac-12 titles and 10 conference tournament crowns while capturing Pac-10/Pac-12 Coach of the Year honors 13 times.

On the court, her Cardinal charges have accumulated 23 first-team All-America selections, 17 conference player of the year awards, 59 first-team All-Pac-10 and All-Pac-12 nods and two Wade Trophy National Player of the Year picks (Jennifer Azzi, 1990; Candice Wiggins, 2008).

"Simply put, Tara VanDerveer is one of the great educators in the game of basketball,” said Muir. "Beyond the game, Tara means so much to Stanford and we take great pleasure in knowing that she will positively impact our student-athletes for years to come."

VanDerveer will enter her 28th season at the Cardinal helm as Stanford opens the 2013-14 campaign in November.
