STANFORD, Calif. – Football player Trent Murphy and women’s basketball player Chiney Ogwumike were announced as Stanford recipients of the 2013-14 Pac-12 Tom Hansen Conference Medal winners by the league office.

A Conference Medal is awarded annually to each member institution’s outstanding senior male and female student-athlete based on the exhibition of the greatest combination of performance and achievement in scholarship, athletics and leadership.

Conference medal winners have been named every year since the 1960-61 academic year. In 2009, the Pac-12 renamed the award the Tom Hansen Conference Medal in honor of Hansen, who retired at the end of June 2009 after serving for 26 years as Commissioner of the Pac-10.

Murphy led Stanford to consecutive Pac-12 championships and Rose Bowl appearances this year and was drafted in the second round of the NFL draft by Washington. Murphy was one of three Stanford players to earn consensus All-America honors. The Mesa, Ariz. native graduated in June with a degree in science, technology and society.

Ogwumike was the national Capitol One Academic All-American of the Year and the Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year in women’s basketball. She was also honored by the Stanford Alumni Association as one of two graduating seniors to receive the 2014 J.E. Wallace Sterling Award for outstanding service to Stanford.

She finished her career as the Pac-12's all-time leading scorer (2,737 points) and rebounder (1,567) and was drafted first overall by the Connecticut Sun.
