Chiney Ogwumike, a Capital One Academic All-American last year, earned her third straight selection to the CoSIDA Academic All-District 8 Team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced Thursday.
Ogwumike was joined on the five-woman District 8 squad by Ruth Hamblin of Oregon State, Jennifer Hamson of BYU, Judy Jones from Grand Canyon University, and Jennifer Schlott of Utah State.
Owner of a 3.46 cumulative grade-point average, Ogwumike is on pace to finish her academic requirements at the end of the current winter quarter this March, and earn her bachelor’s degree in international relations.
As part of her international relations work, Ogwumike studied abroad in Nigeria during the 2013 spring quarter. There, she fulfilled her academic work while interning with the Nigerian government’s Ministry of Petroleum, and participated in a humanitarian mission, working with a charity called “Access 2 Success” to raise $30,000 to build a new basketball court for the local youth.
On the court this season, Ogwumike is among the lead candidates for national player of the year honors and is the only player to rank in the national Top 10 in scoring (27.1 ppg), rebounding (12.2 rpg) and field-goal percentage (64.2). With 10 30-point performances this season, she has earned six Pac-12 Player of the Week nods so far, and has paced the Cardinal to an 19-1 start and 8-0 mark in conference play.
