TEMPE, Ariz. – Nine straight points to open the second half led to an 18-4 Stanford run that boosted the fourth-ranked Cardinal to an 80-56 win over No. 14/24 Arizona State in Tempe.

Stanford (17-1, 6-0 Pac-12) led 28-17 with 7:14 left in the first half, shortly after Chiney Ogwumike picked up her second foul and went to the bench. As Ogwumike, who had 12 points and six rebounds when she picked up her second foul, sat for the final 7:25 of the half, Arizona State outscored the Cardinal 11-7 to trail by just seven at 35-28.

Katie Hempen, who led the Sun Devils (15-3, 4-2 Pac-12) with 13 points, and Sophie Brunner, who had a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds, paced Arizona State on its run before the half.

Ogwumike would return as the second half got underway, scoring the opening bucket after just 23 seconds to open Stanford’s game-breaking run. The national player of the year candidate would go on to score 18 second-half points to post her ninth 30-point game of the season, finishing with 30 points and 16 rebounds.

Fellow captain Mikaela Ruef completed a three-point play moments after Ogwumike’s half-opening layup to get the Cardinal lead into double digits at 40-28. Ruef went on to score nine points with 10 rebounds and five assists in the contest. Lili Thompson would score nine of her 11 points in the second half while Taylor Greenfield split her 14 points evenly over both halves while going 5-of-8 from the field.

Arizona State fared well early on against the Cardinal, taking an 8-6 lead just over three minutes into the contest. The momentum shifted quickly, however, as Ruef hit back-to-back layups to give Stanford its first lead of the game and spur an 11-0 run. Karlie Samuelson hit a 3-pointer to get the lead to 10 at 20-10, and minutes later hit a pair of free throws to put the Cardinal ahead 28-17 with 7:14 remaining in the half.

Hempen scored four quick points followed by a jumper from Brunner to fuel Arizona State’s half-ending run.
