2013 WNBA Schedule

STANFORD, Calif. - Six alumnae will represent Stanford women's basketball as the WNBA tips off its 17th season tonight with the defending champion Indiana Fever taking on the San Antonio Silver Stars at 5 p.m. PT on NBA TV.

The six Cardinal alumnae, all first-round selections, make Stanford the most-represented Pac-12 school on Opening Day. The Pac-12 boasts a total of 16 alumnae on the Opening Day rosters of the league's 12 teams.

Together, the six women have played in a total of 695 regular-season games and 72 playoff contests. Three members of the group have also won an WNBA title: Pohlen (2012, Indiana Fever), Wiggins (2011, Minnesota Lynx) and Powell (2005, Sacramento Monarchs).

Friday's opener will feature two-time WBCA All-American and 2010 graduate Jayne Appel beginning her fourth season with the Silver Stars. Former Stanford teammate and 2011 Pac-12 Player of the Year Jeanette Pohlen begins her third season with the Fever but is currently inactive while recovering from a knee injury suffered during the 2012 playoffs. Pohlen is aiming for a midseason return to action.

The league's opening weekend will feature all Stanford alumnae, as Saturday the Tulsa Shock visits the Atlanta Dream for a 4 p.m. PT tip that is available online through the WNBA's Live Access package. The Shock boasts three former Cardinal standouts, as third-year pro and Pac-12 all-time leading rebounder Kayla Pedersen is joined by the Pac-12's all-time leading scorer, Candice Wiggins, and three-time All-American Nicole Powell for 2013. Wiggins, beginning her sixth WNBA campaign, and Powell, entering her 10th season, were acquired in offseason trades with the Minnesota Lynx and New York Liberty, respectively.

The final Stanford alumna to open her WNBA campaign is three-time All-American and 2012 No. 1 overall pick Nnemkadi Ogwumike. The 2012 WNBA Rookie of the Year begins her sophomore season with the Los Angeles Sparks as the team hosts the Seattle Storm Sunday at 5:30 p.m. PT on NBA TV.

Overall Stanford has had 25 players play in a regular-season WNBA game since the league's inception in 1997. The program boasts 10 first-round draft picks and has had six players win a total of seven WNBA titles.
