LAS VEGAS- Dwight Powell has been named the 2014 Pac-12 Men's Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year, league officials announced Thursday during the quarterfinal round of the Pac-12 Tournament.

In order to be eligible for the Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, student-athletes must be a senior (in athletics eligibility) on track to receive a degree, have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, participate in at least 50 percent of the scheduled contests in the sport and have a minimum of one year in residence at the institution. The athletic accomplishments of the nominees are also factored into the voting for the award.

A Science, Technology & Society major, Powell sports a 3.05 GPA and will graduate in June.

Powell, who last year was named the Pac-12’s Most Improved Player, was tabbed an All-Pac-12 First Team honoree on Monday for the second straight season. Powell is averaging 14.1 points and 7.2 rebounds while leading the Cardinal in 103 assists (3.4 per game) and 38 steals. He has tallied seven double-doubles while scoring in double figures 23 times.

A native of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Powell has twice earned Pac-12 All-Academic team accolades, named to the second team last year after receiving honorable mention status as a sophomore. Also last year, Powell was named an NABC Honors Court selection, with a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher included among the criteria.

In addition to being named to this year’s John R. Wooden Award preseason watch list, Powell was one of 30 candidates for the Senior CLASS Award. To be eligible for that award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition.

Stanford faces Arizona State tonight at 8:30 p.m. in the quarterfinals of the Pac-12 Tournament.
