INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. –  Stanford’s Bernard Muir, the Jaquish & Kenninger Director of Athletics, has been appointed to the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee, the NCAA announced Wednesday. Muir, who was appointed along with UNC Ashville's Janet Cone, will begin his term Sept. 1.

The duo, both of whom possess extensive basketball backgrounds, will replace current committee chair Ron Wellman, the director of athletics at Wake Forest, and Big Sky commissioner Doug Fullerton, whose terms expire Aug. 31.

“I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to serve on the NCAA Division I men’s basketball committee,” Muir said. “I previously had the opportunity to serve the committee as an NCAA staff member; evolving into this role is both a thrill and an honor, and one that I am eager to start.”

Muir has been Stanford University’s director of athletics since 2012. Prior to that, he served three years as director of athletics at Delaware for three years, during which time he was appointed to the men’s basketball committee. However, before his term officially began, he accepted the post at Stanford and had to step down from the committee due to membership and geography requirements of the makeup of the committee.

His concentration on Stanford’s program enabled the Cardinal to capture its 19th straight Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup in 2012-13 as the nation’s top athletic department. Stanford also extended an incredible streak which has seen at least one program capture an NCAA championship in 37 consecutive years.

Stanford has won two straight Pac-12 football championships and played in consecutive Rose Bowl games. Last season, Stanford sold out all seven home football games for the first time. Meanwhile, the Stanford women’s basketball program recently clinched its 14th straight Pac-12 regular season title.

Prior to going to Delaware, Muir was the director of athletics at Georgetown from 2005-09, and from 2000-05 he worked as both associate athletic director for student-athlete welfare and development and deputy director of athletics for administration and facilities at Notre Dame.  From 1992-98, he was the NCAA’s assistant director of the Division I men’s basketball championship before being promoted to director of operations for the event from 1998-2000. Muir also worked at Butler and Auburn , and earned his undergraduate degree from Brown in 1990 and his master’s degree from Ohio in 1992. He was a four-year letterman and team captain at Brown.

The committee will be chaired in 2014-15 by Scott Barnes, the director of athletics at Utah State and current vice chair. Along with Wellman and Fullerton, other committee members include Joe Alleva, the director of athletics at LSU; Joe Castiglione, the director of athletics at Oklahoma; Mark Hollis, the director of athletics at Michigan State; Judy MacLeod, associate commissioner of Conference USA; Bruce Rasmussen, the director of athletics at Creighton; Peter Roby, the director of athletics at Northeastern; and Jamie Zaninovich, the commissioner of the West Coast Conference.
