STANFORD, Calif.- Junior guard Chasson Randle has been named Pac-12 Player of the Week for Dec. 17-22, as announced today by Commissioner Larry Scott.
The honor is the first of Randle’s career and first for a Stanford player since Josh Huestis earned the conference’s weekly recognition last February.
More impressively, Randle’s honor is the first for a Cardinal player during non-conference competition since Matt Lottich accomplished the feat on Dec. 22, 2003.
Randle was instrumental in helping Stanford earn a split of its challenging East Coast road swing, which began with a 53-51 upset of No. 10/10 Connecticut and ended with a hard-fought 68-65 loss to Michigan at the Brooklyn Holiday Hoops Invitational at Barclays Center.
A native of Rock Island, Ill., Randle averaged 20.0 points and 3.0 rebounds while shooting 46.1 percent overall (12-26) and 85.7 percent from the foul line (12-14). Randle played all 40 minutes in both games, becoming the first Cardinal player since Landry Fields in 2010 to log at least 40 minutes in back-to-back contests.
In the Dec. 18 upset of Connecticut, Randle scored a game-high 22 points as Stanford erased a 13-point deficit in the second half. He knocked down four of the Cardinal’s six three-pointers, as Stanford snapped Connecticut’s 54-game winning streak against non-conference opponents.
Three days later in the loss to Michigan, Randle scored a team-best 18 points and nearly rallied the Cardinal from a 10-point deficit late in the second half. Randle did the bulk of his damage from the free throw line (10-11) while his potential game-tying three-pointer fell just short.
In 11 starts, Randle is averaging 18.5 points and 3.5 rebounds per game while shooting 51.1 percent overall, 40.8 percent from three-point territory and 80.6 percent from the foul line.
Stanford returns to action on Sunday, Dec. 29, hosting Cal Poly at 4 p.m.
