The Opening Tip
The 99th season of Stanford basketball gets underway on Friday, Nov. 8, when the Cardinal (0-0, 0-0 Pac-12) hosts Bucknell (0-0, 0-0 Patriot League) in a 7 p.m. tip at Maples Pavilion. Meanwhile, Stanford returns all but two players from last year’s team and every member of its starting lineup over the final 17 games with exception of Andy Brown (torn ACL).

Looking Back At 2012-13
Stanford (19-15, 9-9 Pac-12) advanced to the postseason for the second straight year in 2013, reaching the second round of the NIT after winning the event two years ago. Stanford finished non-conference play at 10-5, including wins over Northern Iowa and Northwestern. In Pac-12 action, Stanford swept the season series against California for the first time since 2008 and upset No. 10/12 Oregon 76-52 at Maples Pavilion.

Captains Named
Seniors Josh Huestis and Dwight Powell have been named this year’s captains.

Scrimmage/Fan Appreciation Event
Stanford held its annual Cardinal-White scrimmage on Oct. 24, highlighting the team’s season ticket holder appreciation event at Maples Pavilion. Chasson Randle (18 points), Anthony Brown (14 points) and Robbie Lemons (10 points) all scored in double figures. Prior to the scrimmage, fans were treated to an exclusive behind-the-scenes facility tour and invited to participate in a complimentary sampling of the enhanced concession items. During warm-ups, Stanford became the first team to debut the revolutionary Google Glass product in real-time action. In conjunction with the CrowdOptic platform technology, season ticket holders attending the event were able to view the action through the athletes’ perspective simply by pointing their mobile device in the direction of the court. In addition, they were also able to join a Google+ hangout or view through their own Google Glass. Assistant coaches Tim O’Toole and Charles Payne concluded the evening by hosting a clinic for 6th Man Club students.

Cardinal Picked Sixth In Pac-12
Stanford has been picked to finish sixth in the 2013-14 Pac-12 men’s basketball preseason media poll. The Cardinal was projected to finish fourth last year but tied for sixth at 9-9.

Non-Conference Schedule Is Stacked
This year’s loaded schedule- one of the best in recent memory- features 17 home games at Maples Pavilion, nine contests against NCAA Tournament teams from last season and a pair of trips to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. The challenging non-conference slate includes a neutral-site matchup against 2013 NCAA runner-up Michigan and the start of a home-and-home series against Connecticut. Home games against BYU and Bucknell, along with a potential tournament matchup against Pittsburgh in the Progressive Legends Classic, will provide the Cardinal with an opportunity to quickly establish a high RPI before Pac-12 competition gets underway during the first week of January.

Powell Tabbed A Senior CLASS Award Candidate
Earlier this week, Dwight Powell was named one of 30 candidates for the 2013-14 Senior CLASS Award. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season. Final ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans.
