STANFORD, Calif.- Recent Cardinal standout Kristie Ahn dropped a 6-2, 7-5 decision to CoCo Vandeweghe on Monday night in the opening round of the 2014 Bank of the West Classic at Taube Family Tennis Stadium.

Ahn fell into an early hole after losing the first set to Vandeweghe, ranked No. 48 in the world and the 2012 Bank of the West Classic runner-up.

Trailing 3-0 in the second set, Ahn refused to quit and ripped off three straight games. An All-American in three of her four seasons on The Farm, Ahn managed to force ties at 4-4 and 5-5 before Vandeweghe, who powered home eight aces, relied on her huge serve to help close out the match.

Ahn, who graduated in June with a degree in Science, Technology & Society, has been playing in professional tournaments over the last month. A native of Upper Saddle River, N.J., Ahn concluded her career with a 97-17 overall record and was 57-8 in duals. Named the 2014 ITA National Senior Player of the Year, Ahn provided the clinching point in Stanford’s 4-3 victory over Texas A&M to secure the 2013 NCAA championship.

Ahn, who never lost back-to-back matches during her college career and chalked up a 51-4 record at Taube Family Tennis Stadium, made a successful return to the court as a junior in 2013 after missing all but three matches in 2012 due to injury and having her freshman year cut short in the postseason.

The tournament run isn’t over yet for Ahn, who will join sophomore Carol Zhao in the doubles draw. The duo will play Tuesday (not before 2 p.m.) against Caroline Garcia and Shuai Zhang.
