STANFORD, Calif.- John Morrissey and assistant coach Brandon Coupe were recently honored with ITA Northwest Region awards, making them eligible for national consideration as part of the annual ITA awards program.

Morrissey received the ITA’s Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sportsmanship & Leadership Award, which recognizes outstanding sportsmanship and leadership as well as scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements. Morrissey, a two-time All-Pac-12 Second Team selection and Pac-12 All-Academic Second Team honoree as a sophomore in 2013, posted a 15-10 overall record as Stanford’s top singles player during his junior campaign.

Morrissey has excelled in his role as someone who leads by example, providing personal guidance both on and off the court to an underclassmen-laden Cardinal team. In addition to participating in various community service initiatives during his first three years on The Farm, Morrissey is viewed by the coaching staff as a thoughtful leader who always places the welfare of his teammates first. A junior from Dublin, Ireland, who participated in Davis Cup competition for his home country earlier this year, Morrissey is also a tireless promoter of his sport, continually looking for innovative ways to encourage student attendance at home matches.

An International Relations major, Morrissey has maintained a cumulative 3.54 GPA through his first three years.

Meanwhile, Coupe was named the region’s Assistant Coach of the Year. Completing his seventh season on The Farm, Coupe was instrumental in helping Stanford continue to improve throughout the year despite battling multiple injuries to multiple key players.

Coupe, who has helped direct Stanford to a 128-70 record and seven consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances during his tenure, oversaw the Cardinal’s third-place finish in the highly-competitive Pac-12. Stanford finished 14-6 overall this season, climbing 25 spots in the national ranking during the month of April while posting four victories over top-40 opponents. More importantly, Coupe served as a valuable resource on a squad whose lineup regularly featured two juniors and three sophomores.
