STANFORD, Calif. - The Knowles Family Director of Men’s Golf, Conrad Ray announced the team’s year-end awards, voted on by the team and coaching staff, honoring five separate members of the 2012-2013 squad.

Sophomore Patrick Rodgers earned Most Valuable Player, after six top-10 finishes including three individual victories on the season. He led the Cardinal with a 70.88 stroke average in 34 rounds of competition. For two consecutive years, Rodgers has been a first team PING All-American, a Ben Hogan Award semifinalist, a Palmer Cup selection, and an All-Pac-12 first team.

The Avon, Ind., native, Rodgers remains the program’s career low stroke average record holder at 70.77 (71 rounds), ahead of Tiger Woods who finished his two-year career at 71.1 in the 1994-96 season.

Rodgers will serve as the 2013-14 captain.

“Patrick will do a great job as our captain this coming season,” said Ray. “He has the voice of the team and leads both in word and deed using a no non-sense approach. His teammates respect his worth ethic and game, and his influence is strong amongst the group. We have a number of strong leaders on our team so to have the group vote in Patrick further supports this notion. It is not common for a junior to be captain but it is common for the captain to be someone that is playing in the top five on a regular basis and a major contributor to the team.”

David Boote received the Steele Award for the freshman with the lowest stroke average at 72.85 (34 rounds). He becomes the 40th recipient, with only seven former players scoring lower than him in their rookie seasons. Boote, who made the All-Pac-12 freshman team, enjoyed four top-10 finishes, including a tied for third showing at the Pac-12 Preview.

Boote and Rodgers were the only two players on the squad who competed in the starting five in all 11 events on the season.

Junior Cameron Wilson has been selected as the Most Improved Player. With five top-10 finishes on the season, Wilson secured the honor with a course-record 61 (-10) at CordeValle where he tied for second at the Gifford Collegiate Championships. He recorded the second lowest stroke average at 71.4 (28 rounds).

A fixture in the lineup, Wilson was an All-Pac-12 second team selection and was named to the PING All-Region West team.

Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year and former 2012 Pac-12 Champion, Andrew Yun was honored with the Stanford Tradition Award, which is given to the player exhibiting leadership, strong work ethic, academic excellence and an overall appreciation of the traditions of the University and the program.

Earlier this fall, Yun competed in the PGA Q-School and returned spring season to finish his degree in sociology. On the season, he recorded a 72.1 stroke average (22 rounds) and enjoyed two top-10 finishes, including a third-place showing at the U.S. Intercollegiate.

“Andrew will leave an indelible mark on the program,” Ray said. “His stroke average and tournament results speak for themselves. He has been a solid leader for us and did an amazing job of being a student athlete. He will be remembered for his short game and putting. When he is on top of his game, it is PGA Tour quality. His shoes will be difficult to fill.”

Yun, a Byron Nelson Award finalist, ranks third in program’s career low stroke average at 71.62 (124 rounds), behind Rodgers and Woods.

As for “The Spooney,” given to the team member with the most tenacity and a never-give-up attitude, the team and coaches selected freshman walk-on Keegan English.

“First of all it is very difficult to make the team as an un-recruited walk-on all together,” Ray continued. “Keegan earned this chance through his great play and has continued to improve during his freshman year. He has a tough minded, hardworking, approach and he adds a ton to the team dynamic. Everyone loves having him around and we think he will just continue to get better.”
