Each week will feature a Q-and-A with a member of the 2014 Stanford softball team. This week, get to know senior outfielder Corey Hanewich.

Why did you decide to come to Stanford?
I came to Stanford because of the University’s long tradition of academic and athletic excellence.

When you were a kid and even now, who would be your role models in the sport?

Jessica Mendoza.

What is one tip you would give to a student-athlete to be successful in school and their sport?
Don’t sweat the small stuff. Academics and athletics can be very stressful – you can take the enjoyment out of both by worrying about every little thing. Work extremely hard in both areas but keep everything in perspective and have a good balance!

What is your favorite memory of your softball career thus far?
My favorite memory from my softball career was that my first collegiate hit was a home run.

What are your favorite and least favorite training drills?
I love taking fly-balls in the outfield – especially when Coach pushes us to test our limits. The more diving the better!  My least favorite training drills are practicing our outfield cross-over steps in the weight room. Every outfielder understands the pain (and gain) from this drill.

What is your major at Stanford, and what are your career aspirations?
My major is called Science, Technology, and Society, a self-designed major that offers a combination of both communications classes and Management, Science, and Engineering (Business Management) classes. I am looking into a career in both broadcast journalism as well as management consulting.

What is one personal goal for the 2014 season?
As a senior, I want to cherish each moment. This will be the last time I will be with this incredible group of girls playing the sport that I love.

What is the best advice you have ever gotten, and from whom?
The best advice I have ever gotten was “own your awkwardness,” courtesy of my fabulous roommate Chiney Ogwumike.

What are three things on your bucket list?
1. Live in Seattle for at least a year – one of my favorite cities!
2. Travel the world – Italy, Czech Republic, Fiji, Belize!
3. Random: play in a human hamster ball!

One word to describe yourself?

Go to warmup song?
“The Man” by Aloe Blacc.

Favorite thing to do for fun?
I love to go to the beach. I’m from Florida, so whenever my friends wanted to hang out, we were usually found at the beach.

Guiltiest indulgence?
Television – I am far too obsessed with TV shows. Scandal, Suits, New Girl … you name it, I probably watch it.

Go-to pregame meal?
Stacks! I typically stick with a traditional omelette breakFEAST (that’s right, Stacks’ breakfast is no joke!).

Most quotable movie?
Three movies come to mind: She’s the Man, Mean Girls, and White Chicks.

What is your spirit animal?
According to my teammates, my spirit animal would be a peacock. I’m not entirely sure how much I agree with them, but I’ll go with it!

Who would play you in a movie?
I don’t know about movie, but all my friends claim I am the real-life Jessica Day from New Girl.

People might be surprised to know that …
I have a little brother that is a freshman on the baseball team. Look out for No. 27!
