STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford softball added depth to its lineup for the 2014 season, welcoming five freshmen from three states and two countries.

“We’re very excited about our freshman class,” said head coach John Rittman. “They bring a lot to our team both athletically and as students. We’re looking forward to great things from this class.”

The quintet of Cardinal freshmen includes: Carley Hoover, Lauren Bertoy, Bessie Noll, Madi Schreyer and Kylie Sorenson.

Hoover was the 2013 National Gatorade Softball Player of the Year and National High School Coaches Association Player of the Year. The pitcher from Clemson, S.C., compiled 1,345 career strikeouts and averaged 2.00 strikeouts per inning during her high school career. Hoover went 16-4, had 338 punch-outs and a 0.15 ERA in her senior season. The two-time Gatorade South Carolina State Player of the Year batted over .500 with 28 home runs, a .710 on-base percentage and a slugging percentage over 1.000 during her high school career.

Bertoy was a four-year letterwinner at Oak Ridge High School in El Dorado Hills, Calif., and holds her high school’s career records in stolen bases, home runs and hits. Bertoy was a 2013 Cal-Hi Sports All-State Second Team selection and provides versatility with the ability to play on the infield and outfield.

Noll provides some international flavor for the freshman class, joining the Cardinal from Fuchu, Tokyo, Japan. Noll was the first girl to make her high school’s varsity baseball team and was a three-time Kanto Plain All-Star and two-time All-Far East Championship Team selection. As a member of the U.S. Women’s National Baseball team, Noll competed in the IBAF Baseball World Cup in 2012, finishing second to Japan.

Schreyer was the 2012 Washington State Gatorade Softball Player of the Year and ESPN High School All-America First Team Pitcher. The two-time KingCO 4A All-Area Most Valuable Player led her team to the state championship in 2012 and a fourth-place finish in 2013. Schreyer has competed internationally for the Junior Women’s Canadian National Team at the 2013 Junior World Championships in Brampton, Ontario, and at the 2011 Junior World Championships in Cape Town, South Africa.

Sorenson makes the trip north from Stevenson Ranch, Calif., as a two-time All-CIF Division I First Team selection and two-time Foothill League Player of the Year. The shortstop graduated as the West Ranch High School and Foothill League all-time record holder in hits, runs and extra-base hits. Sorenson led her team to its first league title in program history in 2012 and reached the Southern Section Division I Quarterfinals in 2013.

The Cardinal finished the 2013 season 39-21 and ranked No. 21/22 in the nation. Stanford finished fourth in the Pac-12 with a 13-11 mark. The team will play three doubleheaders this fall at Boyd and Jill Smith Family Stadium in preparation for the 2014 season against San Francisco State (Nov. 3), Sonoma State (Nov. 9) and Santa Clara (Nov. 10).
