UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Fifth-year senior Justine Fedronic broke the Stanford women’s indoor record for 800 meters on Saturday while also taking down meet and track records at the Penn State National track and field invitational.

Also, Steven Solomon and Kristyn Williams ran world-class times in the 500, each in winning efforts.

Fedronic ran 2:03.25 to lead a Stanford 1-2-3 sweep, with sophomore Amy Weissenbach (2:05.50) also under Weissenbach’s 2013 school mark of 2:05.56. In third, sophomore Claudia Saunders (2:07.17) ran the No. 5 time in Stanford history. Fedronic’s is the No. 2 collegiate time in the country, trailing only the 2:01.32 by Oregon’s Laura Roesler. The meet and track records were 2:03.51 set by Erica Moore in 2011.

The race came about 20 hours after Fedronic anchored Stanford to a school record in the distance medley relay, running a 1,600 split of 4:33.

“We were really riding off the high of last night,” Fedronic said.

Without the benefit of speed training at this point of the season, indications are that Fedronic is in for a big finish to her collegiate career, having already exhausted her outdoor eligibility after placing third at the NCAA Championships last spring.

“This is the most consistent training I’ve ever had in my life,” said Fedronic, who was hampered by injuries for much of her collegiate career. “It’s been about a year since I’ve been healthy and I’m finally reaping the rewards of consistent training.  I’m a lot stronger than I’ve ever been.”

Fedronic was born in Germany, raised in nearby Belmont, Calif. (starring at Carlmont High School), and represents France internationally. She set Stanford’s outdoor record of 2:00.97 at the IAAF Diamond League meet last summer in St. Denis, France.

Racing on the 200-meter banked polyurethane surface at the Horace Ashenfelter III track, Stanford freshman Malika Waschmann served as a rabbit for the first 400.

“I just concentrated on really getting a solid effort,” Fedronic said. “I didn’t have any times in mind. It was all about effort and seeing how we finish.”

This was the fifth 800 matchup between Fedronic and Weissenbach, the two fastest at the distance in school history. Both were NCAA outdoor finalists last year. Fedronic has won each meeting.

“We push each other to get better,” Fedronic said. “We’re competitors, but she’s one of my best friends. We don’t think of it as racing each other. We’re just thinking about racing the rest of the field.”

The race was among several strong performances for Stanford at Penn State.

Sophomore Steven Solomon set a school record of 1:01.44 in the rarely-run 500, breaking the mark of 1:03.4 set by Terry Parks in 1983. The race marked the collegiate indoor debut in an individual event for Solomon, an Australian who was a finalist in the 400 at the 2012 London Olympics.

Solomon's time was the third-fastest in the world this year and the fastest by a collegian this season. His time also left him only 0.46 out of the all-time collegiate top 10.

Kristyn Williams, who broke Stanford’s indoor 400 record two weeks ago, won the women’s invitational 500 in 1:10.82, a mark that also will be considered a school record, though there is no official list for that event.

Williams' time was the fifth-fastest in the world this year and the second-fastest by an American. She is the fastest collegian this season and her time was only 0.06 out of the all-time collegiate top 10.

In all, Stanford had five additions to its all-time indoor top-10 lists, not including the 500. Among them was the personal record 1:49.38 in the men’s 800 by freshman Scott Buttinger. It not only was the fourth-fastest ever for Stanford indoors, but the fourth-fastest indoors or outdoors by a Stanford freshman. Buttinger, running in the slower of two heats, placed sixth overall. Luke Lefebure was eighth in 1:49.71, another P.R. and the No. 6 indoor time ever at Stanford.

Erik Olson broke the existing meet record in the 3,000, while narrowly placing second in 8:57.78.

Kathy Kroeger, a nine-time Stanford All-America, came within one second of her personal record in the 3,000, placing third in 9:10.34.

The meet was one of three for Stanford this weekend. The following are Stanford’s Saturday results from all three meets:
