ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Stanford freshman Dylan Duvio cleared a personal record 17-4 ½ in the pole vault to finish as the top collegian and fourth overall at the Cherry & Silver indoor track and field invitational at the Albuquerque Convention Center on Friday.

In his second collegiate competition, Duvio moved up to No. 3 on Stanford’s all-time indoor list and No. 2 all-time for freshmen, trailing only eventual Olympian Toby Stevenson. He’s also the  fourth-highest vaulter in Stanford history, indoors or outdoors.

Duvio, who had the No. 2 high school mark in the nation last year at 17-3 ½ while at John Curtis Christian School in River Ridge, La., was second at the 2013 U.S. junior nationals and made his collegiate debut Saturday with a 16-10 ¾ clearance at the UW Indoor Preview in Seattle.

“Dylan had a phenomenal night tonight competing against some of the best vaulters in the country,” Stanford pole vault coach Michael Eskind said. “To P.R. by six inches indoors in his second meet of the season speaks volumes to his mental toughness and competitive fire.”

Duvio opened at 16-0 ½ and had only two misses through 17-4 ½. He had three attempts at 17-8 ½, but was unsuccessful.

“The future is very bright for him and we couldn’t be more excited,” Eskind said. “But I truly believe Dylan has a long ways to go as a vaulter.”

Duvio was one of two Stanford athletes competing Friday. In the women’s weight throw, Rebecca Hammar set a personal record of 51-5 ½ to finish 11th.

On Saturday, outdoor All-America Alyssa Wisdom placed ninth in the women's shot put at 45-2 1/2 in her season debut and Ellie McCardwell was 14th in the women's pole vault at 12-2 1/2.
