STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford men’s gymnastics will play host to four meets, including a matchup with defending NCAA champion Michigan, as the 2014 schedule was announced Friday.
The Cardinal opens its season Jan. 11 at California in a nationally televised broadcast on the Pac-12 Networks, and will see the Golden Bears the following weekend in Stanford’s home opener on Jan. 18. Cal will be a familiar foe, as the Cardinal will see the Golden Bears five times this season. Among the familiar faces will be first-year Cal head coach, Brett McClure, who served the past three seasons as Stanford’s assistant coach.
Stanford will get an early look at defending NCAA champion Michigan as it welcomes the Wolverines, Cal and Washington on Jan. 25 in the Stanford Open. The Cardinal will see NCAA runner-up Oklahoma the following weekend in Norman, Okla., for a dual meet.
It will be an international affair at this year’s Collegiate Challenge on March 1 as Stanford plays host to the Japanese collegiate national team, Norwegian national team, Cal and Arizona State. The Cardinal concludes its home slate March 8 against Ohio State before heading to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships on March 29 in Norman, Okla.
Stanford will look to improve on its successful 2013 season, which included a third-place finish at the NCAA Championships, its seventh NCAA top-three finish in the past eight seasons and six gymnasts earning nine All-America honors. In addition, Eddie Penev became the Cardinal’s fourth Nissen-Emery Award recipient as the nation’s top collegiate male gymnast.
