STANFORD, Calif. – The first two races fans will see at the annual Big Row on Saturday at Redwood Shores will be the Stanford lightweights taking on Cal’s open weights.

The two schools faced each other at the Pac-12 Challenge on March 30. For Stanford it was the first race of the spring season. Cal was able to beat the Cardinal in two races. The Golden Bears’ open weight boats defeated the varsity eight by 4.6 seconds and the second varsity eight by 12 seconds.

Two months later Stanford will get a rematch. Cal does not have a lightweight team, so for the second time this year the Cardinal will be facing the open weight boats from Berkeley.

Beginning at 9:30 a.m., the Cardinal 2V8 will lead off the day’s festivities versus the Cal 4V8. The 2V8 has had mixed results this season with a first place finish in the women’s open division at the San Diego Crew Class and a fifth place finish at the WIRA Championships last weekend.

The Stanford varsity eight will race against the Cal 3V8 at 9:40 a.m. The Cardinal boat has won each of its last three races and six of eight overall this spring. They captured the WIRA Championship last weekend and also won the San Diego Crew Classic lightweight race last month.

This will be the final home race for Stanford’s lone senior Molly Hayes, who is majoring in energy resources engineering.

Stanford will have two weeks off after the Big Row before they compete in the PCRC Championships in Sacramento on May 17. The IRA National Championships will take place May 28-31 in West Windsor, N.J.
