STANFORD, Calif. – The top-ranked Stanford lightweight rowing team will travel to Boston, Mass. this weekend to race against the top teams in the country.
Four of the top five teams in the USRowing Lightweight Collegiate Poll will be competing in the Lightweight Invitational on the Charles River. Joining Stanford will be No. 2 Harvard-Radcliffe, No. 4 Boston University, No. 5 Wisconsin and No. 7 MIT.
Racing on Saturday will start at 9:12 a.m. when the varsity eights go at it. The second varsity eight race will be at 9:36 a.m. On Sunday Stanford will race against Boston University and Wisconsin. The two races will take place at 9:20 a.m. and 9:40 a.m.
This marks the sixth straight year that the Cardinal has traveled to Boston in mid-April for racing on the Charles. Last year Stanford entered the weekend ranked No. 1 and was defeated by No. 2 Harvard-Radcliffe. The Cardinal did finish ahead of then-ranked No. 3 Princeton and No. 9 Boston University. The weekend was limited to just one race due to the manhunt for the Boston Marathon bombing suspects.
Stanford had last weekend off from racing. The last time the lightweights were in action was April 5-6 when they brought home some hardware from the San Diego Crew Classic. The varsity eight captured the Women’s Collegiate Lightweight title with a strong advantage over No. 4 Princeton. The second varsity eight won the Carley Copley Cup for finishing first against several openweight teams in the Women’s Open event.
Boston University, MIT and Wisconsin all raced in the Knecht Cup last weekend in West Windsor, N.J. In the varsity eight Grand Final, Boston took second place behind Princeton, while Wisconsin finished third and MIT fifth.
Stanford will have faced five of the other six teams in the top seven after this weekend. The racing will be a good tune-up before the Cardinal competes at the WIRA Championships on Lake Natoma next weekend.
