STANFORD, Calif. – The No. 1 Stanford lightweight rowing team will travel to Southern California for the San Diego Crew Classic on Saturday and Sunday at Mission Bay.
The Cardinal has won the Collegiate Lightweight race three straight years and will look to make it four in a row. The prelims will be the team’s first race of the weekend on Saturday at 11:40 a.m., several hours after the first race of the day takes off at 7:20 a.m. Stanford will be in lane two and will be competing against No. 4 Princeton, No. 9 Tulsa, No. 12 Washington State and UC-Irvine.
After lunch Stanford will be in the Women’s Open A event at 1 p.m. They will be joined in the race by British Columbia, UC-Irvine, CO Row Champ, UCSD and Texas Austin.
Stanford will also have a boat in the Women’s Alumni Final with the winner being awarded the Prudential Dunn Realty Cup. The race starts at 5:50 p.m. with USD, UCSB, UCSD Alumni, Cal Alumni and Gonzaga also among the competitors.
Sunday will determine where each school finishes for the weekend with the first race at 7:20 a.m. The Women’s Open grand final is at 11:10 a.m. with the winner being handed the Joan Ward Memorial Trophy. The Laurel V. Korholz Perpetual Trophy will be awarded to the champion of the Women’s Collegiate Lightweight Final, which is scheduled for 11:50 a.m.
Junior Kate Kidd will be returning to Southern California along with her teammates Martine Johannessen and Lauren Joseph. Kidd is from nearby Del Mar, Calif. which is just up the coastline from San Diego. Johannessen and Joseph are both from the Los Angeles area.
Stanford is coming off a win in the varsity eight over Saint Mary’s last weekend at the PAC-12 Challenge. The Cardinal lost to Cal’s open weights on Sunday.
