SAN DIEGO, Calif. – On the final day of the San Diego Crew Classic, Stanford’s lightweight rowing team put on another show as they won the Collegiate Lightweight Grand Final and the Women’s Open Grand Final.

“It was nice to get two good wins and to see that we still have a lot to work on,” said head coach Al Acosta. “Both boats made good progress from last weekend although this event felt more like the start of the season for us with the intensity and pageantry that goes with the Crew Classic.”

The second varsity eight got things started for the Cardinal as they went up against several open weight boats in the Women’s Open Grand Final. After winning by a big margin on Saturday, Stanford came out strong once again and finished more than seven seconds ahead of the University of Texas. The time put forth by the Cardinal was 7:19.19.

By winning the Women’s Open, Stanford was awarded the Carley Copley Cup and each individual in the lineup was presented with a medal.

The final event of the weekend for Stanford was the Women’s Collegiate Lightweight Grand Final. The boat is undefeated this season in races against other lightweight teams and Sunday would not bring an end to the winning streak. With a time of 7:03.10, the Cardinal finished over five seconds ahead of second place Princeton.

Stanford extended its winning streak in the varsity eight event at the Crew Classic to four years. No Cardinal rower has lost in the event in San Diego. The nine members of the boat were able to hoist the Women’s Collegiate Lightweight Trophy once again and were each awarded medals.

The next racing for Stanford will come in two weeks when they head to Boston April 19-20 to go head-to-head with Harvard, Boston University, MIT and Princeton.
